This private residence on the Inland Waterway consisted of a weekend retreat with later two story additions. The owner wished to greatly expand the home but wanted to maintain its character and complement a caretaker’s cottage on the property. The house was reinterpreted as a series of volumes serving different functions. The original home now serves as an entry and houses a large corridor which acts as a gallery as well as a link between the owner’s suite and the living and entertaining areas. After an addition and reconfiguration the southern two story volume serves as an owner’s master bedroom suite. A large pavilion was constructed on the home’s water side and acts as an entertainment area. The existing kitchen was expanded and upgraded with modern features. Moving the stairs of the northern two story wing outside the original plan allowed for alterations which allowed greater space in the upstairs bedroom and a more private media room. The stairwell also links the bedrooms to an apartment over the new garage. This arrangement of spaces allows for entertaining on a large scale and also permits the owners’ privacy during visits from children and grand children.
